If you've ever wondered whatever became of me ...

I'm still not sure why I joined Facebook this morning. It was early, I had underslept, and three different people had recommended it to me within the last week. To tell you the truth, I'm still not entirely sure what the point of the site is. This evening one of the aforementioned three folks posted on my "wall". What is this wall? Why are people posting on it? Why won't those kids stay off my lawn?

If you're looking for me on the Facebook (that's what I'm calling it now: "the Facebook"), I'll be using this portrait:

In other photo news, this evening Laura gave me this picture of her:

You look very foxy with a 'stache.

Aw, thanks for saying that. It's a real pain in the ass to grow it -- imagine my facial hair as a bonsai tree, and you'll have an idea of the time and attention my 'stache requires. But hearing a blood relation call me "foxy" ... well, that makes it all worthwhile.

I joined the Facebook, and 1 week later I bailed. Do I really want to talk to the high-school friends I never contacted for 14 years after graduating? Do I really want ex-girlfriends writing things on my wall and wanting to be my friend again? Do I really want to maintain friendships I don't care for when I have hardly enough time to maintain the friendships I do care for? The answer to all these questions is "NO". Facebook is the long intestine of the internet: It's full of waste material which should just be expelled from our bodies and flushed.

Excellent points, Greg, but I take a different view of friendships on the Facebook, which is "Let them do all the work." In real-life friendships I'm glad to do my share of the heavy lifting (speaking of which: air compressors from Home Depot? Heavy) but Facebook takes hardly any work at all. I find writing here, even as seldom as I do, to be more stressful and time intensive -- which is not to say I don't love it ... and you!
